Defence, and the related military and dual-use sectors, encompasses activities supporting defensive and national security capabilities. While some of these activities may be defence-specific, others have applications in both the military and civilian spheres.

FDI controls are commonly perceived as being principally concerned with the protection of national security interests. Although the concept of national security has been stretched well beyond the starting point of many FDI regimes, defence, military and dual-use activities continue to be subject to foreign investment controls.
