Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer (HSF Kramer) is pleased to have advised AGL Energy (AGL) on its 500 MW / 2,000 MWh battery energy storage system (the Tomago BESS), to be located in the Hunter region of NSW.
AGL’s Managing Director and CEO, Damien Nicks said, “The Final Investment Decision on the Tomago battery project marks yet another significant milestone in AGL’s delivery of its strategy and the transition and decarbonisation of its energy portfolio.”
The Tomago BESS will be one of Australia’s biggest batteries, and once complete, will provide important firming capacity and grid stability support in NSW. The Tomago BESS will expand on AGL’s existing suite of grid scale battery assets, which includes the 250 MW Torrens Island battery, the 50 MW Broken Hill battery and the 500 MW Liddell Battery which is on track to commence operations in early 2026.
The HSF Kramer Projects, Energy and Infrastructure team was led by partner Alison Dodd with support from solicitor Yonnie Lipshatz and graduate Jordan Stewart. The team was supported by other members of the practice group, including partner Kris Percy and solicitors Dayna Girven and Alisha Mathias who worked on connection matters.
Alison Dodd said, “It was fantastic to work with AGL on the Tomago BESS project, which is a significant investment in its transition of its energy portfolio. We look forward to continuing to support AGL in its ambition to add 12 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable and firming capacity by the end of 2035.”
