Kate is an experienced commercial litigator with a broad practice in commercial disputes and contested regulatory matters.

Kate has extensive experience in large-scale commercial disputes as well as complex regulatory investigations and inquiries (incl. ASIC, ACCC, and AUSTRAC). She regularly advises on ASIC enforcement priority areas. She has worked closely with several large financial institutions, including as in-house counsel for major Australian banks and insurers. Through this experience she is able to bring first-hand experience working with stakeholders to find practical solutions to challenging legal issues. 

Over the course of her career, she has worked on Federal, Supreme and High Court cases, contract disputes, class actions and enforcement matters as well as criminal prosecutions and defamation proceedings – advising clients across a range of sectors including mining, financial services and technology. Kate also has acted for clients in commissions of inquiry and has worked as a prosecutor for the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions.

  • acting for a large general insurer in its defence of a class actions commenced in connection with ASIC regulatory proceedings and pricing practices 
  • acting for a major bank in its defence of a class actions commenced in connection with AUSTRAC regulatory proceedings and continuous disclosure
  • acting for a major global technology company in relation to digital content regulation and associated matters 
  • providing independent legal representation to senior / strategic personnel of major financial institutions in connection with investigations commenced by ASIC, including in relation to misleading and deceptive conduct, insider trading and market disclosures

Background

Kate has a Bachelor of Journalism & Bachelor of Laws from the University of Technology, Sydney, and a Master of Laws from the University of New South Wales. She is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia.

Prior to her career in law, Kate worked as a journalist in Australia and the UK.
