Sonia Martinez
Sonia is an associate in our international arbitration practice in London (currently on secondment to our Dubai office).
Sonia has experience in international commercial and investment treaty arbitration. She has assisted clients across a range of sectors such as pharmaceuticals and energy – including in the context of a six-month secondment to a key energy client. She also has experience with ESG disputes, including climate litigation risk management.
Sonia has been involved in international arbitration proceedings under the ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, WIPO and ICSID rules.

- advising a global energy company on an indemnity claim against the seller in connection with a sale and purchase agreement relating to an oil field in Senegal
- advising an investment fund manager in connection with a contractual interpretation dispute arising out of a sale and purchase agreement
- advising a UK regulated bank relating to issues and delays caused by an IT provider in connection with an outsourcing agreement for the delivery of the bank's core banking system
- acting for a leading global hotel chain in an ICC arbitration against an Owner arising out of disputes regarding non-payment of fees in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and alleged mismanagement
- acting for a global energy supermajor in arbitration proceedings under the LCIA Rules involving claims arising out of the termination of a contract relating to a complex LNG project
- advising an energy company on the public international law implications of its subsidiary's forced participation in the balancing electricity market of a Central Asian republic
- a US energy major in arbitration proceedings under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules relating to a post M&A dispute concerning an offshore oil field in the North Sea
- the Republic of Azerbaijan in ICSID proceedings under the Energy Charter Treaty
a biotechnology company in an arbitration relating to one of the leading Covid-19 vaccines
Background
Sonia holds a first class LLB from SOAS University of London and a first class LLM in International Law from University College London, graduating with the highest average mark both times. She also studied Arabic at Cairo University.
Sonia is fluent in English, Spanish and French and intermediate in Arabic.
