HSF is proud to have supported the work of Africa Construction Law (ACL) by hosting and participating in the West Africa sub-regional session of the ACL’s inaugural virtual conference, Africa Construction Law Week.
The virtual conference brought together experienced construction law professionals from across the continent (West, East, North, South, Francophone and Lusophone) to discuss the infrastructural challenges faced both across the continent and specific to each region.
The West Africa sub-regional session took place over two days, with day one addressing transactional issues and day two focussing on dispute resolution in the West Africa region.
We were very fortunate to be able to welcome a truly diverse range of speakers to the conference, who each brought a unique and different perspective to important issues commonly encountered on construction projects and disputes in West Africa. Herbert Smith Freehills Partners James Doe, William Breeze and Hilary Lau were among the panellists.
The transactional module discussed some of the challenges around contracting, financing and PPPs that are specific to the region followed by a panel discussion regarding Chinese and West African perspectives on Chinese sponsored projects. The speakers in the disputes module exchanged ideas around early and effective disputes avoidance/resolution and discussed the challenges of ADR methods and enforcement in the region.
If you were unable to attend, the presentations and recordings of both modules can be found on the Africa Construction Law website here.
