Jinny Chaimungkalanont is a stamp duty and state taxes expert with experience across all sectors Australia-wide. 

Jinny is a Partner in the State taxes practice with over 20 years' experience advising on stamp duty issues Australia-wide. Her market-leading practice spans all sectors including real estate, funds management, infrastructure, energy, renewables and mining.

Jinny is one of Australia's leading stamp duty experts, with extensive experience structuring and advising on complex commercial transactions across a broad range of industries. As Managing Partner of our APAC Finance & Restructuring practice, she combines deep technical knowledge with practical, commercial insight to help clients navigate significant transactions and manage risk with confidence.

Known for her responsive, collaborative and pragmatic approach, Jinny is passionate about simplifying complex stamp duty issues for clients.   • Major Australian Bank – Advised on the restructure and establishment of the ASX listed non-operating holding company.
  • BHP Group — Advised on the takeover of OZ Minerals, the unification of its dual listing on the ASX, and the demerger of South32.
  • Brookfield — Advised on the $17.8bn acquisition of AusNet Services, the $1.286bn IPO of Dalrymple Bay Infrastructure and the$2.5bn sale of a 50% holding in Patrick Terminals.
  • Chemist Warehouse — Advised on the merger with Sigma Healthcare, with Sigma Healthcare relisted on the ASX.
  • A Major Domestic Bank — Advised on the acquisition of consumer banking operations from an international financial institution.
  • Origin Energy — Advised on the proposed $10.6bn scheme of arrangement involving Brookfield, EIG and co-investors.

  • Abacus – Advised on its acquisition of interests in the Myer Department Store, Bourke Street, Melbourne.
  • Atlassian — Advised on the redevelopment of Sydney's Central Station to deliver the Sydney Innovation and Technology Precinct with the State of NSW.
  • BlackRock – Advised on the $450m acquisition of Australian self-storage operator StoreLocal.
  • Link REIT — Advised on the acquisition of 100 Market Street, Sydney, for A$638 million.
  • Various clients – Advised on numerous acquisitions, developments and funds for Charter Hall, Mirvac and M&G Real Estate, Opal Aged Care, Serenitas across the real estate sectors including commercial, industrial, retail and residential including build to rent and manufactured home estates, retirement villages and aged care.

Renewables

  • CleanPeak Energy — Advised on the A$500m investment by KKR to support the development of its pipeline of energy transition projects.
  • EnergyAustralia — Advised on the structuring and development of the 350MW/1,400MWh Wooreen battery energy storage system in Victoria.

Background

Jinny graduated from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Laws, and a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours and University Medal). She has practised with Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer since 2001. Jinny is a regular presenter at conferences, as well as client training and in-house seminars. She has also been a member of the Tax Institute of Australia’s NSW Office of State Revenue Liaison Committee, which provides feedback to the NSW government on draft legislation, revenue rulings and policy matters.
