Whilst public authorities in the UK are already subject to human rights obligations via the Human Rights Act 1998, a recent private members bill raises the possibility of imposing environmental and human rights obligations on businesses as well as public authorities.
The Commercial Organisations and Public Authorities Duty (Human Rights and Environment) Bill seeks to introduce an overarching duty on companies to prevent environmental and human rights harms, reporting obligations and new avenues for civil liability and regulatory enforcement.
