Leading global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer has advised on seven winning deals at the Project Finance International (PFI) Awards 2025. The PFI Awards celebrate the most impactful, pioneering and high‑profile project finance transactions globally.

The firm advised on the following winning deals:

Global

  • Global Deal of the Year: advised a syndicate of commercial lenders on the financing for the construction of the Sizewell C nuclear project in Suffolk, UK. London Finance partner Matthew Job and Corporate partner Tom Marshall led the cross-practice team.

APAC

  • Power Deal of the Year: advised Energy Corporation of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, on the financing aspects of the procurement of the Central-West Orana regulated concession and the implementation of the 6GW Central-West Orana renewable energy zone, along with regulatory reforms and contractual arrangements. The cross-practice team was led by a number of partners in Australia.
  • Wind Deal of the Year: advised Squadron Energy on the financial close of its AU$1 billion facility from 10 banks for the 100-turbine, 450MW wind farm located in Queensland, Australia (Clarke Creek Wind Farm). Sydney Finance partner Elizabeth Charlesworth led the team.

Europe

  • PPP Deal of the Year: advised the lenders on the greenfield project financing for the first section of a new highspeed rail line between Porto and Lisbon, Portugal. London Finance partner Matthew Job and of counsel Edgar Monteiro led the team.
  • Infrastructure Deal of the Year: advised the lenders to the winning consortium for the c.£3 billion financing of the Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme (HARP) project in the UK for United Utilities. London Finance partner Matthew Job led the team.

Middle East

  • Renewables Deal of the Year: advised low carbon utility company ENGIE on the bid submission, development, construction and financing aspects of the Khazna (PV4) solar power project in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Dubai Projects partner Phil Hanson led the team.
  • PPP Deal of the Year: advised the lenders to the Jubail Buraydah water transmission project in Saudi Arabia to improve water security. Dubai Projects partner Phil Hanson led the team.

The firm was also recognised for its role advising on six winning deals at the PFI Awards 2024, including Deal of the Year for the UK's Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) and Net Zero Teesside (NZT) projects. These awards reinforce the firm's position as a trusted global legal adviser on significant project finance deals.
